El Hospital Posadas, located in the town of El Palomar in Buenos Aires province, has increased organ donation processes in recent weeks, enabling new organ transplants and corneal implants.
Thanks to the collaboration between the Hospital Procurement Union of Organs and Tissues (UHPROT) and the medical teams, Posadas National Hospital carried out four new donation processes in October, which made possible eleven organ transplants and seven corneal implants.
In recent weeks, patients admitted to the Adult Intensive Care Unit, the Adult Emergency Area, and the Pediatrics ward became donors through different types of processes—due to brain death, cardiac arrest, and controlled asystolia—providing new opportunities for people on the waiting list.
As a result, seven kidney patients, two liver patients, one kidney-pancreas patient, and one patient in a cardiac emergency were able to receive transplants. Additionally, seven patients received corneal implants, including an adult patient who was blind and regained their vision.
The UHPROT of Posadas Hospital is part of the General Directorate of Health Networks and is part of the Procurar Program, promoted by INCUCAI and the Ministry of Health of the Nation, which aims to create hospital units dedicated to the comprehensive development of procurement and transplant activities.
This model seeks to strengthen the role of hospitals as central axes of the donation system, in coordination with provincial jurisdictions, involving them in the detection, selection, and treatment of potential donors.
“Posadas Hospital, due to its capacity and potential, is a key actor in this project that consolidates a new paradigm: donation and transplantation as part of the hospital's daily work,” highlighted the authorities and stressed the importance of having the support of the Ministry of Health to accompany the large health team behind each process.
